Overcoming A Season Of Trials & Adversity

Steps To Overcoming A Season Of Trials And Adversity

Big Idea: God is still good, even when times are bad.

1. Prosperity is temporary – so be thankful.

Proverbs 23:4-5 Don’t wear yourself out trying to get rich. Be wise enough to know when to quit. 5 In the blink of an eye wealth disappears, for it will sprout wings and fly away like an eagle.

How has your situation changed over the past couple weeks? We often don’t realize how blessed we are in the moment and miss out on opportunities to be thankful.

Even tonight…what should you and your family give thanks for? *Take time to share something each of you are thankful for.

2. Adversity is inevitable – so be prepared.

2 Timothy 3:12 Yes, and everyone who wants to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will suffer persecution.

We should not be surprised when difficult times come our way. This is true physically because we live in a broken and decaying world. It is also true spiritually. We are in a constant battle against Satan and his lies, temptation, deception and attacks.

We are told it is coming, so lets be prepared. Don’t be caught off guard and be ready to go to battle with God’s Word and promises.

John 16:33 I have told you all this so that you may have peace in me. Here on earth you will have many trials and sorrows. But take heart, because I have overcome the world.

Remember that God is bigger… Bigger than sin, viruses, devorce, hurt, loss and even death.

3. Your effort is important – so don’t give up.

Galatians 6:9 So let’s not get tired of doing what is good. At just the right time we will reap a harvest of blessing if we don’t give up.

There is a powerful message about perseverance found in an article by Oswald Chambers.

“Perseverance means more than endurance— more than simply holding on until the end. A saint’s life is in the hands of God like a bow and arrow in the hands of an archer. God is aiming at something the saint cannot see, but our Lord continues to stretch and strain, and every once in a while the saint says, “I can’t take any more.” Yet God pays no attention; He goes on stretching until His purpose is in sight, and then He lets the arrow fly. Entrust yourself to God’s hands. Is there something in your life for which you need perseverance right now? Maintain your intimate relationship with Jesus Christ through the perseverance of faith. Proclaim as Job did, “Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him” (Job 13:15).

Faith is not some weak and pitiful emotion, but is strong and vigorous confidence built on the fact that God is holy love. And even though you cannot see Him right now and cannot understand what He is doing, you know Him. Disaster occurs in your life when you lack the mental composure that comes from establishing yourself on the eternal truth that God is holy love. Faith is the supreme effort of your life— throwing yourself with abandon and total confidence upon God.” (The Faith To Persevere, O. Chambers)

May we all move forward in total confidence in God. That He is good and in control

Hebrews 10:36 Patient endurance is what you need now, so that you will continue to do God’s will. Then you will receive all that he has promised.

4. God is faithful – so you be faithful.

Isaiah 43:2 When you go through deep waters, I will be with you. When you go through rivers of difficulty, you will not drown. When you walk through the fire of oppression, you will not be burned up;the flames will not consume you.

God is faithful in providing (Philippians 4:19), encouraging (Philippians 1:6), comforting (Matt. 5:4), strengthening (2 Cor. 12:9) and blessing us with a supportive community of believers (Heb.10:25).

1 Peter 5:10 In his kindness God called you to share in his eternal glory by means of Christ Jesus. So after you have suffered a little while, he will restore, support, and strengthen you, and he will place you on a firm foundation.
