What is a Spiritual Gift?

When we come to 1 Corinthians 12-14 we see that Paul wanted to make sure that the Corinthian Church had a proper understanding about spiritual gifts. The church at Corinth desperately needed instruction on this topic, and so do we. Notice verse 1 of chapter 12: “Now about spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be ignorant.” This is a topic that is too important for believers to be uninformed about and it’s certainly too critical to ignore and take lightly.  Why?  The health and wellness of the local church is at stake.

Let’s begin by defining what a spiritual gift is. One of the most clear definitions I have been taught is the following, “Spiritual gifts are divine abilities distributed by the Holy Spirit to every believer according to God’s design and grace for the common good of the body of Christ”.  Gifts are from Christ for Christ.  They are given by Christ as He sees fit, to bring about His plan and purposes for ministry.  I pray as we study together of the next few weeks that we will not be found “ignorant” or unfaithful when it comes to using and understanding our Spiritual Gifts.  Begin praying the Christ would open your eyes to how you can faithfully use your gifts to serve the local church.  Our upcoming series “From Christ For Christ” begins June 8th.
